Rare Occurrence

Prune Belly Syndrome is an extremely rare congenital disorder, occurring in approximately 1 in 40,000 live births. It predominantly affects males, with a ratio of about 3 to 1 compared to females.

Absence or Underdevelopment of Abdominal Muscles

One of the hallmark features of PBS is the absence or severe underdevelopment of the abdominal muscles, giving the abdomen a wrinkled or 'prune-like' appearance. This lack of muscle support can lead to a variety of complications, including difficulty breathing and problems with digestion.

Urinary Tract Abnormalities

PBS commonly involves abnormalities in the urinary tract, such as dilated or enlarged ureters and bladder. These abnormalities often lead to urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and kidney damage. Many individuals with PBS also face challenges related to bladder and bowel control.

Variability in Severity and Associated Conditions

The severity of Prune Belly Syndrome can vary widely among affected individuals. Some may have mild abdominal muscle deficiency, while others may have more severe complications affecting multiple organ systems.

Challenges and Lifelong Medical Care

Individuals with Prune Belly Syndrome often face significant medical challenges throughout their lives. Treatment may involve surgeries to correct urinary tract abnormalities, improve abdominal muscle function, or address other associated conditions.

Prune belly syndrome
is a rare condition that gets its name because weak or absent abdominal wall muscles make an infant’s belly look wrinkled. Other condition features include undescended testicles and urinary system problems. Treatment depends on the condition severity. Some babies don’t survive, some require many surgeries and others grow and lead fairly normal lives

Health & Nutrition

Health refers to the overall condition of an individual's physical, mental and social well-being. It is a state of complete physical, mental and social harmony, where there is no presence of any kind of illness or disease. Being healthy doesn't just mean lack of illness; it also involves having a balanced diet, adequate physical exercise, good mental health, and a positive outlook on life. Hence, good health should be a priority, and individuals should take necessary steps to maintain and improve their physical, mental and social well-being. This includes seeking medical attention when necessary, following a healthy lifestyle, and adopting good health habits.
